Hand-Mining Sapphires on Our Family Claims

There’s something about the Central Queensland Gemfields that keeps drawing us back.

For four generations, our family has packed up, headed west and called the gemfields home for weeks at a time. It's where life slows down, the days begin early, and every shovel of dirt carries the possibility of uncovering something extraordinary.

Hand-mining sapphires isn't glamorous.

It's hard work.

Long days are spent digging, moving gravel, washing wash through the sieve and carefully sorting through every stone, hoping to catch that unmistakable flash of colour. Sometimes it's a tiny glimmer of green. Other times it's a beautiful parti sapphire displaying two or three natural colours in a single crystal. And sometimes... it's nothing at all.

That's just mining.

By the end of the day we're dusty, sweaty and feeling every bit of the work we've put in. We gather around the campfire, cook dinner, compare the day's finds and tell stories late into the evening. Before long, the conversation turns to tomorrow—what ground we'll work next, what we missed today, and what might still be waiting beneath the surface.

Our family has always lived by one simple motto:

Just keep digging.

Because every bucket of wash holds the possibility of uncovering a sapphire that has remained hidden for millions of years.

The Central Queensland Gemfields are famous for producing some of the world's most remarkable sapphires. While classic blue sapphires are certainly found here, the region is especially renowned for its stunning parti sapphires, along with vibrant teals, greens, yellows and an incredible range of natural colour combinations. No two sapphires are ever exactly the same, and that's one of the reasons we love them.

For us, the journey doesn't end when a sapphire is found.

Many of the stones we recover from our family claims continue their journey into our workshop. Whether they are skin-polished, cabachoned or meticulously facted, each Sapphire has a unique personality that we work with to bring out the best in each one.

From rough crystal to finished jewellery, we're fortunate to be involved in every stage of the process. Knowing where our sapphires come from—and the people behind them—is something we're incredibly proud of. It's a level of provenance that allows every piece we create to carry a story as unique as the gemstone itself.
