What Does a Custom design Really Cost?
If you’ve ever wondered how much a custom-made jewellery piece costs — or why — this guide will help you understand the full process behind bespoke jewellery. As a manufacturing jeweller, I create each piece from scratch, combining CAD design, hand fabrication, and precision stone setting. Here’s a clear look at what you’re paying for and why custom jewellery is worth the investment.
1. Design & Consultation
Every piece begins with sketches, design conversations, stone layout, and refining the style. This initial stage shapes the entire project and ensures the piece is truly personal.
2. CAD Design & 3D Modelling
CAD modelling turns the concept into a technical, buildable structure. It includes adjusting proportions, thicknesses, claws, and stone placement to ensure both beauty and structural integrity. Most custom designs require more than one revision to achieve the perfect result.
3. Handmaking & Finishing
This is where the piece comes to life through traditional bench skills—shaping, filing, soldering, assembling, and detailed finishing. Hand fabrication ensures strength, longevity, and a level of care that machinery alone can’t replicate.
4. Stone Setting
Each gemstone is individually set with precision. Whether it’s a solitaire, multi-stone design, halo, or simple accent stones, this stage requires focus, control, and expert technique to ensure longevity, security, and a clean finish.
5. Final Polish & Materials
Gold, gemstones, and any components are quoted separately. Client-supplied materials are assessed before work begins to ensure they are suitable for safe use.
What Is the Average Price?
Most bespoke jewellery pieces — including CAD design, handmaking, and stone setting — fall between $900 and $1,400 in labour, plus metal and stones.
This range reflects modern industry rates and the craftsmanship involved in making a one-of-a-kind piece.
Why Custom Jewellery Costs More
Custom pieces aren’t mass-produced. They involve skilled labour, thoughtful design revisions, and precise hand finishing. You receive a piece designed exclusively for you — made to last, made with intention, and made with care.
