Collection: Sapphires in the raw

Here are some of our sapphires in the raw — uncut and untouched. Some are lightly skin-polished, not to change them, but to understand them more fully. This allows us to see what lies within the stone, determine whether it is suitable as a cutter, and decide the best angle, shape, and approach to get the very most from it, while respecting the sapphire itself.

Our sapphires come from virgin ground in the Rubyvale Gemfields — ground that has never been worked before. They are uncovered by hand, using only jackhammers, picks, and shovels. Because of this, we are quite literally the first humans to ever unearth and hold these sapphires after tens of millions of years underground.

All of our stones are fully traceable, with known provenance from the moment they leave the ground. Sapphires are ancient — formed tens of millions of years ago — and holding one straight out of the earth carries a feeling that is hard to put into words. It is an honour and a privilege, and one I never take lightly.

There is a distinct energy in a sapphire when it is freshly unearthed, and it remains long after. You can feel its age, resilience, and quiet power in your hands. Certain larger stones are intentionally kept as natural specimens, as big sapphires often cut too dark unless they are exceptionally light in colour — for example, a pale blue stone with a white cross table. Preserving these stones in the rough allows their true nature to be appreciated.

Some sapphires are simply too rare to alter. Those stones are kept exactly as the earth shaped them, their form and story left intact.
